This project explores how man’s hand on nature heightens its intrinsic beauty.
I titled this work Pristine Myth because the common held belief is, a pristine nature is the most pleasing and most valued. I argue that in realty very little, if any, landscape has not been touched by the hand of man. From the native Americans burning the prairie for the buffalo, to the ancient people farming the southwest. I think we need to reassess our ideas of what is aesthetically pleasing in the landscape by evaluating man’s mark on the landscape.
I have chosen the eastern plains of Colorado for this work because. The eastern plains of Colorado are a place where the stark earth, hard horizon, and majestic sky combine to create a magnificent scene like no other place I’ve been. It is vast and appears neglected; this couldn’t be further from the truth. While most view man’s mark on the land as destructive, I examine how constructed forms have bettered the landscape by giving human scale to a land and sky without limits.
